When the World Unleashes Their Fury – Acts 21:27-36

Dear River Reach Family,

When the seven days were almost over, the Jews from Asia, upon seeing him in the temple, began to stir up all the crowd and laid hands on him, 28 crying out, “Men of Israel, come to our aid! This is the man who preaches to all men everywhere against our people and the Law and this place; and besides he has even brought Greeks into the temple and has defiled this holy place.” 30 Then all the city was provoked, and the people rushed together, and taking hold of Paul they dragged him out of the temple, and immediately the doors were shut. 31 While they were seeking to kill him…

Acts 21:27-29, 30-31

By now I shouldn’t be shocked when I read about the depravity of man in Paul’s day and it almost perfectly parallels the current events of our day. Modern man is still just as godless and depraved today as they were in Paul’s day. Satan is still pouring his efforts into deceiving the nations (Revelations 20:2-3, 8, 10). As believers we are in the midst of a spiritual war against the forces of darkness that will at times spill over into physical conflict. Because Satan’s battle is against God, God’s people will bear the brunt of Satan’s vitriol. Unsurprisingly the tactics of Satan’s forces are still the same today. Lying, spinning the truth, deceiving, inciting people to anger and hatred, slandering, intimidating, and even violently attacking those who love God and stand for the truth. In our passage for this Sunday, the hatred of the Jews for Paul immediately explodes on him as he is trying to serve and honor God in the temple. Satan’s servants quickly unleash a withering and violent attempt to beat Paul to death in the temple of God! As I read these events my mind immediately questions, why? Why would God subject His beloved servant to the anger of a mob? Is there any purpose to this suffering? Should we expect similar treatment as the servants of the Lord? Thankfully our Lord and many more of His faithful servants have passed this way before. The end of the path always leads to glory!
