Making reproducing disciples of Jesus Christ

Evaluating Ministry Motives – Acts 20:33-38

Dear River Reach Family,

“I have coveted no one’s silver or gold or clothes. 34 “You yourselves know that these hands ministered to my own needs and to the men who were with me. 35 “In everything I showed you that by working hard in this manner you must help the weak and remember the words of the Lord Jesus, that He Himself said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’”

Acts 20:33-35

On a fairly regular basis I will have people knock on my door, give me a call, or contact me via some other form of marketing. Why are they contacting me? Why are they trying to get into my life? What is their motive in their interaction with me? It is definitely right to try to market to make a profit in business, but what about in ministry? While business seeks profit as its ultimate motive, ministry should always be for the good of others and the glory of God. Personal profit from ministry should never be a motivation for a servant of Jesus Christ (Mark 10:45). Motives are very difficult to judge because they are not always visible. It would be very natural to carry a profit mindset into ministry (Acts 20:33; 1 Peter 5:2). To honor our Lord, we must be willing to give of ourselves and our own resources to edify believers (Acts 20:34). With the right motives in place, the servant of the Lord will find great joy in being able to give of himself to others! (Acts 20:35)
