Making reproducing disciples of Jesus Christ

Evaluating Priorities in 2019 1/4

Dear River Reach Family,

Thus says the LORD of hosts, ‘This people says, “The time has not come, even the time for the house of the LORD to be rebuilt.”’” 3 Then the word of the LORD came by Haggai the prophet, saying, 4 “Is it time for you yourselves to dwell in your paneled houses while this house lies desolate?”

Haggai 1:2-4

The new year gives us an opportunity to evaluate our priorities. God designed life to force us to reveal our priorities through our actions. Talk is cheap. Actions reveal the heart. The Old Testament book of Haggai gives us a window into God’s confrontation with Judah about their priorities. About 17 years prior to the writing of this book, the Lord kept his promise to Jeremiah and returned some of the Jews exiled in Babylon back to their homeland of Judah (537 BC). Within the first year they laid the foundation of the temple in an attempt to restore God’s Old Testament plan for worship. Shortly after they began the work it stopped. For 16 years the foundation of the temple lay on hold as God’s people allowed other priorities to have first place. They rebuilt the wall of Jerusalem that had been torn down and clean up a land that had been decimated. They rebuilt their own homes, but the house of the Lord still lay in ruin. It is important to take care of our families and physical needs, but God also expects us to prioritize His kingdom. This Sunday we will allow God’s Word through the Book of Haggai to challenge our priorities.
